Fabric furniture is beautiful and comfortable — and vulnerable. A single cup of red wine on a light linen sofa can cost thousands in reupholstering or professional cleaning. The solution is preventive fabric protector: a water-repellent and stain-resistant layer that penetrates the fabric's fibres and protects against spills, stains and UV radiation. This guide walks you through the whole process — when, which product, how — with a focus on PFAS-free solutions.
What is fabric protector?
Fabric protector is a liquid applied to textile surfaces which then dries into the fibres. The liquid creates microscopic protection:
- Water-repellent: water beads up on the surface instead of soaking in
- Stain-repellent: spills (coffee, wine, juice) sit on top of the fabric for 30-60 seconds, giving you time to wipe them off
- UV protection: counteracts fading from sunlight
- Antistatic: reduces dust build-up
Unlike a surface lacquer, the fabric protector is discreet — you cannot see that the fabric has been treated, the feel is the same, but water runs off as it would on a jacket.
PFAS-free — why it matters
Earlier fabric protectors relied on PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) — a group of thousands of different chemicals known as "forever chemicals" because they do not break down naturally.
The EU has now banned or restricted several PFAS variants [1] and more are in the pipeline. The industry is moving towards phasing out PFAS entirely.
Ernst P's Sun, Rain & Stain is PFAS-free — it uses water-based silicone technology for the same protective effect without the environmental risk.
Properties:
- Free from hazard pictograms
- Odourless on application
- UV filter against sun damage
- Water-repellent without PFAS/nano
- Antistatic effect reduces dust build-up
- Pilling resistance — preserves textile structure
The range — more options
We have additional fabric protectors for different needs:
Universal Protector (silicone-based)
For standard furniture fabric application. Silicone-based, PFAS-free. Good for sofas, armchairs, cushions.
Universal Protector Microfibre & Absorbent Leather
Special formula for microfibre and absorbent leather (suede, nubuck) which absorb liquid differently from ordinary fabric. Do not use standard fabric protector on these materials — choose this one instead.
Eden Waterproofing UV-Protection
For outdoor furniture with higher UV exposure. Thicker protective layer with strong UV resistance.
How often should you reapply?
Standard rule of thumb
3-4 times per year for normally worn indoor furniture [2].
Adjustments
| Usage | Frequency |
|---|---|
| Rarely used guest armchair | 1-2 times/year |
| Daily everyday sofa | 3-4 times/year |
| Family with small children | 4-6 times/year |
| Pets (cat/dog) | 4-6 times/year |
| Outdoor furniture (rain/sun) | Every 2-3 months |
| Newly purchased fabric furniture | Immediately on purchase + 1 follow-up treatment 3 months later |
Water test to know for sure
Spray a few drops of water on an inconspicuous area of the sofa (under the seat cushion, for example). If the water beads up = the protection is active. If the water soaks in = time to reapply.
Step-by-step
1. Prepare
- Vacuum the furniture thoroughly — including between cushions
- Wipe off any stains with a damp cloth, wait until completely dry
- Ventilate the room — open windows, ideally with a draught through the room
2. Shake the bottle
Sun Rain Stain and similar products have an emulsion formula that needs shaking before use so the silicone is evenly distributed.
3. Spray evenly
- Hold the bottle 20-30 cm from the fabric
- Spray an even surface — not concentrated in one spot
- Work systematically — seat section, then back, then arms
- Three light coats are better than one thick one
4. Wait for drying
Between coats: 20-30 minutes. Total drying time: 2-4 hours. Do not use the furniture during this time.
5. Light polish (optional)
For extra finish: wipe over with a microfibre cloth after full drying. Evens out the surface and removes any tackiness.
6. Full curing in 24-48 hours
Wait at least 24 hours (preferably 48) before exposing the furniture to:
- Heavy loads
- Pets or children
- Splashes of water or spills
Common mistakes
Mistake 1: Spraying concentrated in one spot
Too much liquid in one place creates a dark stain or stiffness.
Fix: Three light, even coats with 20-30 minutes between.
Mistake 2: Forgetting to test on the underside
Some fabrics react unexpectedly — colour change or stiffness.
Fix: Test on an underside first. Wait 24 hours, check. Then apply to visible surfaces.
Mistake 3: Treating over an existing stain
The spill gets "locked in" instead of being able to be wiped off.
Fix: Clean the stain first. Wait until completely dry. Then apply the protector.
Mistake 4: Using the wrong product on microfibre
Standard fabric protector can make microfibre stiff.
Fix: Use Universal Protector Microfibre & Absorbent Leather for microfibre and nubuck.
Mistake 5: Forgetting to reapply
The protection lasts 3-4 months under normal use. If you forget, the protection is gone when red wine is spilled.
Fix: Set a calendar reminder every 3 months. Or do the water test monthly and reapply when needed.
What happens if you do not apply fabric protector?
Fabric furniture without a protector absorbs liquid straight away — stains penetrate deep into the fibres and become almost impossible to remove without professional cleaning.
Risks:
- Water stains from just splashes (water leaves mineral residues)
- UV fading of the fabric (especially the front seat surface)
- Static electricity that attracts dust
- Permanent stains from coffee, red wine, juice
Economically: a good fabric protector (~SEK 200-400) protects a sofa worth SEK 10,000-30,000. The ROI is fairly straightforward.
Maintenance between treatments
Daily
- Plump the cushions for even wear
- Turn the cushions weekly so the same side is not exposed
Weekly
- Vacuum the furniture with an upholstery nozzle
- Wipe off leather/hide sections with a damp cloth
Monthly
- Water test to check the protection
- Dust edges and underframe
Quarterly (or as needed)
- Reapply the protector based on the water test or schedule
When a fabric protector is not enough
If you already have large stains you need:
- Furniture polish for leather
- Stain removal for fabric (Universal Cleaner)
- Professional cleaning for difficult cases (wet granulation, steam cleaning)
Sun Rain Stain is preventive — not a stain remover.

Vanliga frågor
How often should I apply fabric protector to my sofa?
3-4 times a year for optimal protection. Newly purchased fabric furniture should be treated immediately — the protection is strongest then because the fibres are free. Expect to do it more often if the sofa is subject to daily wear (family with small children or pets), and less often for rarely used guest armchairs.
What is the difference between PFAS-free and conventional fabric protector?
PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are water-repellent chemicals that have been used in traditional fabric protectors. The EU now classifies PFAS as environmentally harmful — many types are being banned or restricted. Ernst P's Sun Rain Stain is water-based and PFAS-free but offers the same protective properties through silicone-based technology.
Does fabric protector guard against red wine and coffee?
Yes, against fresh spills — you have 30-60 seconds to wipe off the liquid before it soaks into the fabric. The protection is not 100%, however — dry spills should be wiped off immediately with a dry cloth, wet spills with absorbent microfibre. No stain removers as standard, but spills wiped up immediately leave no stains.
Can I apply fabric protector to outdoor furniture?
Yes — Sun, Rain & Stain is designed for both indoor and outdoor use. The UV-resistant formula counteracts fading of fabric furniture placed in direct sunlight outdoors. Expect more frequent reapplication (every 2-3 months) for outdoor fabrics exposed to rain and sun.
How long should the fabric protector dry?
Sun Rain Stain dries in 2-4 hours at room temperature. Do not use the furniture or allow pets/children onto it during drying. Full curing (full protective effect) takes 24-48 hours. Apply in a well-ventilated room with windows open.
Do I need to coat all sides?
No — apply only to exposed sides (the seat, the back, the arms). The underside and interior parts do not need to be treated. For a sofa: concentrate on the seat section + armrests where the main wear occurs.
